Platform and Products, to win one or lose both?

As I see in today business, if I am the owner of a restaurant, I will attract my customers with unique food and good experiences of the restaurant itself. To make my food unique to my restaurant, I will not provide my food to other competitor restaurant. This is make sense when the main objective (a.k.a. main business) is Restaurant not the Food itself. But when apply to online or digital business, I think I see it differently.

Compare Restaurant with Platform and Food with Products. If both can be independent business itself. At first, everyone want to achieve the win on the Platform fight, so they keep the great Products (sometimes Features) only available on their own Platform. As I see, many wars on the Platform (e.g. OS, Browser, Mobile, Internet TV) which happens, Platforms not success because not have enough good Products and in the other hand Products not success because not available in enough Platforms (to reach critical mass usages). This contradictions prevent both success to be happen. In the Platform fight, it should not fight on the Products inside but should fight with the core value of the Platform itself like convenient and usability.

Sooner or later, each (digital) wars will reach it end then the standard will emerge, like what it happen to OS and Browser. We will see who win each Platform fight and who decide to survive by no longer limit the Product availability.

Mobile browser still not enough

I think about the sentence “put the right man in the right job”. This also apply to digital device not only human.

Nowadays, I mainly share my thoughts and stories to various social networks via mobile phones. Although the mobile phone now so advanced in hardware, software and internet connection, I discover that not all actions are well doing on mobile phone especially its browser! Not yet enough to handle such a complex HTML5, CSS, Flash, Overlay content, Complex interaction, etc. Easy to crash and take too much times to load. I summary what I think which device did best (with Social networks) below :-

Best with mobile phones are Upload photo (that just take), Check in to places, Reply comment, Like on topics

Better use Notebook/Desktop are Share other website story direct URL, All features that only available via desktop mode (not available in mobile apps).

Even I not mentioned Tablets, their browser also still not be able to replace Notebook/Desktop one too.

Start with Why (http://amzn.to/x14u8O) is the book that my big boss used to recommend me to read and teach me the secret of it. It help we find the root cause, the reason and make me better drive the great result and escape from thinking trap when we start to think from “Why”. I think this also practical to life and many things outside from works.

Why’s life? It may be more familiar if said “Why I born?” “Why I have this life?”. Sound like simple question from broken heart people or hopeless people who faced lots of tough things in life. Don’t think that sad.

I always believe that we have things to learn everyday and every minutes in life is valuable time for learning.

Full competition of Wifi at Paragon. I see the communication on the door that there are 4 Wifi networks available here. AIS is partnered with 3BB, AIS customers who want to use the Wifi need to subscribe to some AIS Wifi packages. dtac Wifi are now free for dtac customers by go to request for one day username and password at dtac shop 3rd floor. True Wifi are available to subscribed customers or some special packages that offered Wifi for free (same like AIS did). Customers seem to have more choices of Wifi here now.

First car accident

Someone say, all car driver would face one same thing sooner or later, that is a car accident. I used to worry and nervous, can’t imagine how my first car accident will look like. I am sure of one thing that no one like it, same like me too.

This morning, My car got hit by followed car from sudden brake. The first moment I heard the crash sound, I feel a bit shock, sad and try to accept what will going on, waste of time and also money. But after first discuss with the driver who ride the car which hit mine, while I am going to call the Insurance, he ask me to take a look at the crash position again. It look like nothing happen to my car except only the car ID tag. So, he try convinced me to let him go due to my. Car seem not effect any. I know that it’s not the best choice to let him go like that but I think it’s may not worth my time, go to work late and risk for other accident in the middle of the dark road, so I agree and we both separate.

After I arrive at the car park, I have time to see the crash position behind my car more clear under bright light. I found tiny distort of the body but the color still not impact and a bit damages on the black plastic. At first, I am sad that my car got these first damages by other people (other than I did it myself for 2-3 times), but I feel happy to know that I am still ok and these damages are very less compared to what I used to see other people got. I first think that today is a bad day, but now I think today is the good day that I did not get any harms from the car accident create by other people out of my control.

Why I not buy online?

I have a discussion with my friends that generate thought on why they not buy online which make me excite and can’t sleep without writing it due to I afraid to forget it in tomorrow morning.

Trial and Trust are 2 keys in my findings. Discount on online shopping, if not high enough like 50%-70%, can’t make people to risk buying online for the first time. But if they have tried it once and “pass all the worries”, it will make they buy online again if the discount is worth the effort, this time discount no need to high like the first time. Premium is the positioning we frequently imagine our product to has. One way to stay at the premium level should be giving an unique experience.

If we talk about premium coffee, I believe many people will think about Starbucks, me too. The comparison between things also be one key to figure out which is more premium. This will make sense if we compare Starbucks and Dean&Deluca. It’s clearly that Dean’ was seem to be more premium when compared to Starbucks, why? Major reason from me is because it only has one branch in Bangkok, compared to Starbucks xx branches, if not exceed 100 aleady. Second should be the food that freshly made by themselves rather than order from the hotel. Third maybe the unique decoration and space with high ceiling. Last but not least maybe the Place that Dean&Deluca stay togethger with the signature Mahanakorn project, the new construction of tall building with unique design in Bangkok.
